In the XII century, Guillaume Paynel founded Hambye Abbey in a valley along the banks of the river Sienne. The Abbey knew great prosperity until the 14th century and the community became extinct some years before the Revolution. Partly dismantled in the XIX century, the abbey was saved starting in 1956 thanks to the intervention of the Beck family, then the Council of La Manche. This short collaboration allows, today the presentation of one of the most complete groups of monastic buildings in Basse-Normandy. The monastery belongs to the style of transition where the roman rooms like the parlour and the scriptorium encircle the beautiful "capitulaire" room, a jewel of Norman gothic. The abbatial stands today open to the sky, giving the edifice the charm and atmosphere of romantic ruins. The grounds of the domain however are open for walks thanks to a network of pathways.
